Elizabeth McWilliams's campaign for safer road junction in Milton.
Lots of residents are worried about how dangerous the Humphries Way/A10 junction is. I am too. It’s the staggered junction where pedestrians and cyclists cross between Landbeach and Milton. Sadly, there have been three accidents here in just two weeks in April.
There is money earmarked for junction improvements as part of the planning permission for the New Town. Officially this kicks in once 300 homes are occupied, which is some time away!
I feel we can’t afford to wait for that process to start. I am taking action through every
possible channel to push for the changes to be much earlier.
I am asking the developers to bring forward junction improvements
I have been meeting the developers at the New Town and have a good relationship.
Immediately after two accidents on the same day in April, I contacted them to ask what could be done. The good news is that technical drawings are ready and the works can be carried out earlier if there is a strong need for them.
I am working with the elected Mayor and the County Council officers
Dr Nik Johnson (elected Mayor of Cambridgeshire) spoke at the Landbeach Annual Parish Meeting where the issue of the junction was raised. Nik took immediate action, contacting all relevant parties. He intends to use his convening powers, as Mayor, to make this work a priority.
I have also been in touch with relevant officers at the County Council.
I am asking for your help for action
I’m keen to show that the community backs my initiative. Please complete my quick survey or scan the QR code above to let me know your experience of the Humphries Way junction.
At the time of writing, 94% of those who have completed the form say that they have
experienced problems at this junction. An astonishing 63% of respondents say they have
witnessed incidents there.
Some of the comments left include:
‘I’ve lost count of how many accidents I have witnessed or seen after they have occurred. Something needs to change before there’s a fatality.’
‘I have lived in Landbeach for 23 years and seen multiple accidents at this junction. People are confused as to who has priority.’
‘It is so depressing hearing the frequency of sirens attending this junction.’
‘I’ve seen multiple near misses, I actively go a longer route to avoid using that junction as its dangerous, poorly laid out and the speed limit of 50mph is far too high for the amount of traffic crossing multiple directions, often at the same time.’
‘Would love my children - secondary age, to be able to cross that road safely on a bike but it’s not possible at that junction.’
Thank you for sharing your experiences!
