Time for water companies to clean up their act.

Updated: Jul 2, 2024

Labour pledges to put water companies under “special measures”

Over 10,000 people have been hospitalised for waterborne diseases from British lakes and

rivers since the last election. Diseases transmitted through water (such as typhoid, salmonella and E.coli) have almost doubled in the past two years.

England is the only country in Europe to have a fully privatised water provision.

An incoming Labour government would put offending water companies under special measures, strengthen regulation and make law-breaking water bosses face criminal charges.

Elizabeth McWilliams, Labour’s candidate for Ely and East Cambridgeshire said:

“It is sickening that this sewage scandal has put over ten thousand people in hospital.

“The river Cam runs through our constituency of Ely and East Cambridgeshire and should be a safe, clean river for all sporting and recreational activities.

“The next Labour government will put water companies under special measures if they don’t clean up their act and strengthen regulation to force them to uphold higher standards.

“We will give the regulator tough new powers to make law-breaking water bosses face criminal charges and ban the payment of their multi-million pound bonuses until they clean up their toxic filth.”
