New figures from Ely and East Cambridgeshire Labour reveal there were 168 households with children in East Cambridgeshire in the final weeks of the last Conservative Government. Homelessness across England rose a staggering 20% over the course of the last parliament.
The analysis comes as the new Labour Government announces more support to tackle homelessness – with an additional £10m in emergency support for rough sleepers. Last week in the Budget, the Chancellor announced an additional £233 million for tackling all forms of homelessness, taking total spending on reducing homelessness to nearly £1 billion in 2025-26. This money will directly fund critical services to prevent homelessness and support people into secure, stable housing - helping those at risk of homelessness to pay deposits and negotiate with landlords, reducing the overall need for temporary accommodation.
Labour inherited a broken system that left far too many people – including, disgracefully, more than 100,000 children – without a home. Here in East Cambridgeshire that means families living without the basic security of a place to live.
That’s why Labour is taking action to end the homelessness crisis. As we approach the harshest winter months, Labour has pledged an extra £10m in emergency support for rough sleepers, and at last week’s budget the Chancellor announced a huge package to help councils like ours reduce homelessness, getting families into secure accommodation – and reduce the costs of temporary accommodation for council tax payers.
Labour is fixing the foundations so we can Britain back on its feet, and communities like East Cambridgeshire can thrive. In won’t be easy after the chaos and incompetence of the last 14 years but we will get there, and the work of change has already begun.
