Labour will switch on Great British Energy for East Cambridgeshire
Labour will set up Great British Energy, a publicly-owned clean power company, to cut bills for good and boost our energy security.
Great British Energy will ensure jobs and supply chains are built here in the UK, developing our clean energy industries and offering new jobs – with opportunities for community clean energy projects here in East Cambridgeshire.
Labour’s plan will lower bills because renewables are far cheaper than gas.
Great British Energy is part of Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan to create 650,000 good jobs, cut bills by £300 on average and deliver real energy security.
Elizabeth McWilliams, Labour's candidate for Ely and East Cambridgeshire said:
“Great British Energy will allow Britain to take back control of our destiny and invest in cheap, clean homegrown energy that we control. Funded by asking the big oil and gas companies to pay their fair share through a proper windfall tax, so the proceeds can be invested in the future of the country.
“Here in East Cambridgeshire, this will mean developing better community energy – with GB Energy empowering our local authorities and cooperatives to develop small-scale and medium-scale community, clean energy projects. Profits will flow directly back into East Cambridgeshire to cut bills, not to the shareholders of foreign companies.
“The pain and misery of the cost of living crisis was directly caused by the Tories’ failure to make Britain resilient, leaving us at the mercy of fossil fuel markets controlled by dictators like Putin.
“The choice at this General election is clear: higher bills, more fossil fuels and energy insecurity with the Conservatives, or lower bills, clean energy and energy independence with Labour.”
