No excuse for abuse!

South Cambs District Council taking a lead in tackling violence against women and girls, thanks to the ‘never take no for an answer’ campaign by Labour’s Elizabeth McWilliams

Elizabeth McWilliams explains:

White Ribbon is the leading UK’s leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls. The aim is to stop violence before it starts.

White Ribbon Accredited Organisations can make a real difference towards ending violence against women by promoting a culture of respect and equality among their staff and wider communities. By raising awareness among employees, people can learn how to become allies and call out violent and abusive behaviour when they see it.

For everyone’s sake, it is important.

I asked a question of South Cambs District Council at their meeting in November last year. I wanted to know if the council was going to sign up for White Ribbon accreditation and if not, why not?

The answer I got was disappointing: the council would not be pursuing accreditation ‘at this time’.

Now, I am not one to take ‘no’ for an answer, so I worked across parties (and Independent) to put a motion on the next council meeting agenda for the council to become White Ribbon accredited.

And guess what? By the next council meeting, the Lib Dems at South Cambs District had changed their minds and decided to go for White Ribbon accreditation. Good news! I’m pleased that the Lib Dems at South Cambs have now seen the benefits of signing up to the White Ribbon campaign. Let’s hope that the next time, they don’t have to be dragged into it.

Any individual can take the White Ribbon pledge: I promised to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.

You can do so to. Check here.
